A community shaped by water

The original town centre was submerged when the dam was completed in 1977. The current Pantabangan was rebuilt on higher ground, and its people — descended from Ilongot and Igorot settlers, with later Tagalog and Ilocano migrants — kept the name and the memory. In the dry season, the foundations of the old town reappear: a quiet, moving piece of living history.

Farms, forests, and footprints

Agriculture remains the backbone of Pantabangan — rice, vegetables, and freshwater fisheries from the reservoir. Eco-tourism has steadily grown alongside it: boatmen, guides, and homestay operators have opened a second economy around island-hopping, kayaking, and trekking. The Pantabangan-Masiway Hydroelectric Plant supplies clean energy back to the national grid.

A reservoir cradled by mountains

Pantabangan covers 18 barangays draped across the Caraballo foothills, a watershed that feeds Central Luzon's rice belt. The Pantabangan-Carranglan Watershed protects ~85,000 hectares of forest. The reservoir itself was created when the dam was completed in 1977, and its many islands and inlets now anchor the municipality's tourism economy.

Welcome to Pantabangan

The Municipality of Pantabangan sits in the foothills of the Caraballo mountains in Nueva Ecija — a quiet, forested town that grew around one of the largest reservoirs in the Philippines. Founded in 1917, Pantabangan today is best known as Central Luzon's premier eco-tourism destination: island-hopping on the dam, kayaking calm coves, hiking the watershed, and visiting heritage ruins that reappear in the dry season.
